North End Lake
Right in the heart of Port Elizabeth. Ideal
for day trips only. The Carp and Blue Kurper are not very big but catches
are exceptional and bags of up to 100 fish in an eight hour period are
common during summer time. The dam also has very big catfish and eels.
This venue is perfect for a day trip to pass a bit of spare time, or
for the novice who would really enjoy a bit of speed fishing. Being
in the city it is noisy and definitely not for anyone seeking peace
and tranquility.
Lake Farm
10 kilometres out of town set in a serene valley in a farming community.
The only disturbance here will be the cry of a fish eagle, the splashing
of the fish or the bark of a bush buck. Carp weighing up to 10 kg each
are regularly caught, with good catches of smaller fish as well. There
are also nice Blue Kurpers and Black bass to be caught. Carp fishing
is excellent all year round. This is the ultimate venue for a day trip
from Port Elizabeth.
Darlington Dam
Some of the finest fresh water fishing in the Eastern Cape.Situated
right in the Addo National Park. Carp are plentiful with a good average
weight between 2 and 5kg. Catfish are huge with fish weighing up to
20 kg each being caught on a regular basis. Large Blue Kurpers provide
excellent sport in the warmer months. Eels, yellowfish and mudfish are
also regularly caught. This is an excellent day/night venue or even
a few days. We prefer to camp at the waters edge but there is accommodation
available below the dam wall for those who believe the night was made
for sleeping. The dam is best between September and May as it becomes
extremely cold at night during winter. Since the dam lies within the
Addo National Park there is plenty of game and bird life to be seen
while star gazers will enjoy the clear unpolluted nights.
Fish River
Here we fish right in a private game farm and a stones throw away from
Shamwari game reserve. We camp at the water’s edge and are not
likely to see or hear anyone else during our stay. We must fish at night
because this is eel country and they only bite at night. Eels weighing
up to 12kg each are caught regularly while smaller fish in the 3 to
5 kg class are abundant during summer. Big carp weighing up to 8kg each
as well as catfish weighing up to 10 kg each are also plentiful. The
river is wild and this is not a venue for the faint hearted as you are
likely to be visited by warthog, nyala or a kudu as you sit and wait
for a bite. This venue is best fished from October through to the middle
of April.
Wriggleswade Dam
This is undoubtedly the best big fish dam in South Africa. Carp of 6kg
are branded as babies and fish up to 14kg each are regularly caught
with the average being 8 to 10kg. Yellowfish are plentiful as well and
seldom weigh less than 2kg each with fish up to 4.5kg the target. They
are fantastic fighters. The dam also has plenty of eels, and is one
of the finest bass dams in the country with regular bass tournaments
taking place here. They are also plentiful for shore based anglers and
weigh up to 4kg each. The dam has a problem with water grass in summer
but this can be overcome. It fishes best from March to May and August
and September. It is best reached from East London as it is only 70km
from the city, and only 12 kilometres from the town of Stutterheim.
This is not a day trip dam and is best fished for 2 days and a night.
We fish on private property and there is no disturbance. Bird watching
is very good as well.
Kommandodrift Nature reserve
This dam is situated between Cradock and Tarkastad and offers fantastic
Carp and Catfish fishing with record sized fish of both species being
caught on a regular basis. Because of the distance to the dam we cannot
do this as a day trip, but here too we camp at the waters edge or we
can provide basic accommodation right on the dam. There are also full
ablution facilities available at the venue. Game abounds in the area
with the rare mountain zebra and aardwolf quite prolific. There is also
excellent bird watching with a bird hide situated in the river below
the dam wall. Because of the extremely cold winters we prefer to fish
here from September to April.
Other venues
There are many other venues that we can take you to such as the Gariep
dam, Grassridge dam, Bridledrift dam and Mpofu dam as well as a few
of the rivers. These are however all available to the general public
and can be crowded at times. Some venues also do not permit camping,
or overnight stays. These venues do, however remain an option and the
Gariep and Mpofu dams especially are well worth a visit during summer
